RED-BLUE CONNECTOR
// THE MISSING LINK
Connecting the Blue Line to the Red Line at Charles/MGH will improve core system capacity, relieve crowding in the downtown transfer stations, expand regional access and improve social equity.
Advocating For Red–Blue
TransitMatters has led the effort to compel the MBTA to complete the inner core subway system by connecting the Red and Blue Lines along Cambridge Street. This connector will significantly improve access for residents on the Blue and Red Lines in environmental justice communities including East Boston and Dorchester and connect everyone in the area to jobs and services at Logan Airport, Mass General Hospital, the Kendall Square/MIT Innovation complex and the soon-to-be developed mini-city at Suffolk Downs. Through a series of advocacy initiatives, from a special Beer & Transit event, to our first campaign buttons, to several opinion pieces in Commonwealth Magazine, we have drawn attention to this project in a manner that has attracted the attention of the T’s Fiscal Management and Control Board and the Secretary. Our efforts were instrumental in securing a $15 million commitment in the MBTA’s recently approved 5-year Capital Investment Program (CIP) for design and engineering work associated with the Red/Blue Connector. Work is currently underway under the auspices of MBTA consultants to begin the process of developing a more detailed designs and cost estimates for this critical connectivity project. TransitMatters remains committed to seeing this project through final approval and completion.
